Dark Sky Land is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to connecting people to the land, nature, imagination and the cosmos.

Our mission is to increase public awareness of the night sky through the direct experience of natural darkness and wilderness restoration.

The vision is to establish the Dark Sky Land Astro-wilderness Corridor as a protected Dark Sky Refuge on Earth for future generations. Engage an inspire local communities to rapidly preserve a 600-mile region from light pollution’s existential threat to wildlife ecosystems, human health, astronomy, biodiversity, bird migration, and local economy.

Dark Sky Land’s proximity to the center of an ancient astro-archeological world, i.e. Chaco Canyon, Acoma Pueblo, The Zuni Pueblos, Navajo People, El Mal Pais Natural Monument, the Gila National Forest, among others, is an inspiration to engage in multidimensional practices and learning experiences for years to come.

NATURAL DARKNESS

For millions of years lifeforms co-evolved with a daily cycle of light and dark. Some species specialized into nocturnal creatures resting during the day, while others became active in daylight and rest at night. When human introduced artificial lighting, the careful balance of the natural world was disrupted. Artificial light alters the feeding, migratory, and reproductive behaviors of wildlife with a destructive impact on biodiversity. The Lack of natural darkness in our home and community environments is harmful to human health. Under increase levels of artificial light, the proper restorative, restful function of sleep is not possible. Too much light affects the circadian rhythm and inhabits production the sleep hormone melatonin, making illness and disease more common.
